  Kamal Gautam
Founder and CEO


Kamal has over 15 years of experience in commercialization and product development in the biotechnology and software industries.  Prior to founding Motif, he was President & CEO of BioQuest Innovations Inc., a biotech firm in the field of therapeutics commercialization services.  In that role, he provided operational management for BioQuest and its portfolio companies, and built BioQuest from founding to include a portfolio of 6 drug technologies and oversaw the development of the first technology to IND-readiness in preparation for its sale.

Kamal has led or played a major role in several private and public financing rounds, technology deals and company acquisitions totaling over $200M, and negotiated license agreements, CRO and CMO contracts, and institutional research agreements.  Kamal has also worked at Merck Frosst Canada, where he co-authored OnTRAC, an analysis of the biotech sector in Ontario which provided the background for the creation of the Biotechnology Council of Ontario.  His prior experience includes consulting with major clients in the financial services sector, and development and marketing with a software start-up company (Bremer Associates, Inc.) with customers in the financial services, higher educational and defense industries.

Kamal has a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (Honours) from Ottawa University and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business. He is co-president of the Ivey Alumni Association / Toronto Chapter, and Chair of the Ivey Venture Forum.


     
  Richard Timmer, Ph.D.

Dr. Timmer has a wealth of experience and operational management expertise in preclinical and early clinical drug development, intellectual property management, technology licensing, and pharmaceutical business development. Most recently, as a Scientific Consultant for drug development at BioQuest Innovations Inc., Dr. Timmer successfully moved the lead compound for NeuroMedix Inc. through a program of toxicology, safety pharmacology, and cGMP manufacturing in less than 12 months.  Dr. Timmer’s previous experience includes the following positions:
  • Technical Advisor - Troutman Sanders LLP, Intellectual Property Group
  • Director of Clinical Operations - Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.
  • Director of Clinical Operations - Reddy US Therapeutics, Inc.
  • Director of Business Development - Reddy US Therapeutics, Inc.
  • Assistant Professor - Emory University School of Medicine, Dept. of Physiology

Dr. Timmer is the author of 19 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and is an inventor on 6 issued patents and 8 pending patent applications covering composition and use of triazine compounds for inflammatory and cardiovascular disease.
